Maersk Line announces significant progress in its large-scale container ship fleet retrofit program aimed at reducing fuel consumption, operational costs, and emissions. This strategy, known as the "win-win mode," has not only enhanced the performance of Maersk vessels but also provided long-term value for shipowners.

To date, Maersk has collaborated with 50 shipowners on 200 vessels, completing over 1500 projects. Currently, 1000 projects are ongoing with an expected completion by 2027. The funding for these upgrade projects is shared between Maersk and the shipowners.

Ahmed Hassan, Head of Maersk's Asset Strategy and Strategic Partnerships, stated: "Our medium-term chartered fleet plays a significant role in our operations and total fuel consumption." He emphasized the importance of partnering with collaborators to implement solutions that reduce emissions and enhance fleet competitiveness.

According to Alphaliner data, over half of Maersk's current fleet is under charter agreements. Out of their total fleet of 736 container ships, approximately 392 are chartered vessels.

The retrofit program includes significant modifications such as propeller replacements or adopting bulbous bows to enhance speed efficiency. Other improvement measures include waste heat recovery systems and shaft generators. These upgrade measures aim to improve vessel efficiency and reduce energy consumption.

This initiative aligns with Maersk's 2030 goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 35%. Last year, the company announced plans regarding new ship construction, exploring the use of alternative fuels.

A notable achievement includes converting a large container ship to methanol dual-fuel propulsion, increasing container capacity by nearly 5%. Maersk intends to carry out similar conversions on sister ships of the same class.
