According to the latest projections from the supercomputer operated by sports data analytics and forecasting platform Opta Analyst, Brazil holds only a 6.23% chance of winning the 2026 FIFA World Cup, ranking sixth overall. Despite being a five-time World Cup winner, this sobering result has drawn widespread attention, clearly reflecting the increasingly competitive landscape of modern football. Under the forecast, Brazil fails to secure a spot among the top-tier contenders, falling behind several strong European nations as well as defending champion Argentina.

Spain leads all contenders with a title probability of 15.81%. France follows closely at 12.95%, while England ranks third at 11.06%. Argentina, the reigning World Cup champion, sits fourth with 10.46%, remaining a major contender for the trophy. Portugal takes fifth place at 6.89%, just ahead of Brazil. With nearly identical odds around 6%, both Portugal and Brazil are grouped in the second tier. Further down the list are Germany at 5.76%, the Netherlands at 3.82%, Norway at 3.39%, and Belgium at 2.4%.

Though Brazil’s low ranking has sparked discussion, the outcome is not entirely unexpected. While the nation boasts the most World Cup titles in history, its inconsistent form during the current qualifying and preparation phase has prevented it from being viewed as the clear frontrunner. To return to elite status, Brazil will need to deliver performances far exceeding current expectations.

In recent years, Opta’s supercomputer forecasts have gained growing industry recognition. During the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, the model correctly named Chelsea as the top pick, and the club went on to defeat Paris Saint-Germain in the final to claim the championship. Even so, the system has previously produced notable inaccuracies. Ahead of the 2022 World Cup, Brazil was projected as the overwhelming favorite with odds above 16%, while Argentina and France were ranked second and third respectively. In the end, Argentina defeated France to lift the trophy, while Brazil crashed out before the semi‑finals.
