According to the "2025 Christmas Shopping Intentions Survey" conducted jointly by the National Confederation of Shopkeepers (CNDL) and the Credit Protection Service of Brazil (SPC Brasil), it is estimated that retail sales in Brazil will contribute 849 billion reais to the economy during the 2025 Christmas season.

Zhongjin has learned that the survey results indicate that 76% of consumers plan to purchase gifts this Christmas, with an estimated 124.3 million people expected to participate in shopping. On average, they plan to buy four gifts by the end of this year, while the A/B income group intends to increase their purchases to five items, with an average value of 174 reais per gift. This figure represents an increase of 37 reais compared to 2023, a growth of nearly 30%.

The survey reveals that children (58%) are the primary recipients of Christmas gifts this year, followed by mothers (46%), spouses (40%), fathers (23%), and siblings (23%). Among the respondents, 28% indicated that the most valuable gift would be given to children, 19% to husbands/wives, and 18% to mothers.

CNDL President José César da Costa stated that Christmas in 2025 will further highlight its "undeniable importance to the Brazilian retail sector."

He emphasized that this period is crucial for consumers to plan financially and for businesses to gear up for shopping. "In the coming weeks, the streets will be crowded, but consumers still have time to research and negotiate," he assessed in a statement.

Demand for clothing is expected to be the highest this Christmas, with an intention rate of up to 52%. This is followed by perfumes and cosmetics (36%), shoes (30%), toys (30%), and accessories (22%). Another highlight of the research is that 43% of consumers have already or plan to substitute experiential gifts (such as travel, dinners, outings, or shows) for material gifts.

According to the survey, 38% of respondents expect to purchase the same number of gifts this year as in 2024, while 31% plan to buy more gifts, and 20% plan to reduce the quantity of gifts.

Slightly less than half (41%) of consumers hope to spend more on Christmas shopping in 2025 compared to 2024, 26% plan to decrease their expenses, and 23% plan to spend the same as in 2024.

Physical stores remain the primary shopping channel for Christmas this year, with 75% of respondents stating that they will personally visit physical stores to purchase gifts. The main shopping locations will be department stores (36%) and shopping malls (31%).

Regarding online shopping, 58% of respondents stated that they would purchase at least one Christmas gift online, equivalent to 94.2 million people. On average, 70% of gifts will be purchased through this channel.

The survey indicates that three-quarters (82%) of consumers plan to compare prices before buying Christmas gifts to save on expenses.

The main payment methods for Christmas shopping among consumers are Pix (54%), installment credit cards (39%), debit cards (28%), and cash (23%).
