Pix, Brazil's instant payment system, has been online for 5 years and has recently achieved a significant milestone. The system currently accounts for over half of Brazil's payment transaction volume. According to data, during the second quarter of this year from April to June, Pix processed 19.3 billion transfer transactions, representing a 10.5% increase from the previous quarter.

The growth rate of transactions through Pix far exceeds other payment methods, such as credit cards (4.0% increase), debit cards (1.5% increase), and prepaid cards (3.9% increase). During this period, credit cards processed 5.4 million transactions, debit cards processed 4 million transactions, and prepaid cards processed 3.2 million transactions.

Comparatively, the usage of other payment forms is significantly lower when compared to Pix. Bank payment slips (boletos) accounted for 1.4 billion transactions, while checks totaled only 33 million transactions. All other payment methods combined made up 48.8% of the total transactions in the second quarter, with Pix occupying 51.2%.

Statistical data reveals that transfers made through TED currently lead in terms of fund flow. In the first quarter of this year, fund flow through TED transfers amounted to 11.4 trillion Brazilian reais, while Pix recorded 8.4 trillion reais during the same period.

According to data from the Central Bank of Brazil in October, Pix keys (chave Pix) are the most commonly used payment method within the payment system, accounting for half of the total operations. Following this, manual input of the payer's branch number and target account comprises 39.4%. The third most common method is payment through dynamic QR codes (QR code dinâmico), representing 8.3%.

Central bank data indicates that 77% of Pix transactions are carried out by individuals aged 20 to 59, with adults aged 30 to 39 accounting for 28.7% and those over 60 representing 5.6%.

The Central Bank of Brazil highlights that 43% of Pix transfer operations occur in the Southeast region, followed by the Northeast region (27%), South region (12%), North region (10%), and Central-West region (8%).
