On the eve of International Workers' Day in Brazil, the country's eight major labor unions have spoken out and will present a unified labor demands document to President Lula. This document includes 26 key proposals concerning workers' welfare, such as ending the "6x1" shift system, reducing the weekly working hours from 44 to 40, increasing the minimum wage, and exempting individuals earning less than 5,000 reais per month from income tax.

This document is a continuation and update of the "Worker's Agenda" released at the 2022 "National Workers' Conference." It has been jointly signed by eight major labor unions including the Unified Workers' Central (CUT), Labor Force (Força Sindical), General Union of Workers (UGT), and New Union Center (NCST), showcasing an unprecedented unity among Brazil's working class.

The five core highlights in the document include improving labor regulations, safeguarding workers' rights, promoting equal and inclusive workplace environments, strengthening public services and social security, tax reform and economic justice, and moving towards green and sustainable development. These core demands cover various aspects, from working hours to tax policies to environmental sustainability, demonstrating the urgent need for comprehensive reforms.

Although President Lula has taken a cautious stance and will not attend public May Day celebrations in person, he plans to meet privately with representatives from the eight major labor unions during the holiday to address their demands. Lula has recorded a national address about Labor Day, scheduled to be broadcast on May 1st, expressing respect for the working class and making policy commitments.

This joint action is seen as a concentrated pressure from Brazilian labor organizations on the government, reflecting the working class's urgent expectations for improving working conditions and social security. The ability to achieve breakthroughs at the legislative level in the future will depend on the coordination process between the government and the parliament.
