Foreign media reported that a fire broke out on April 10 local time in containers aboard the London-registered container ship EVER LENIENT, which was berthed at Singapore’s Pasir Panjang Terminal. The fire was successfully extinguished by April 11.

In a statement, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) said the firefighting operation was led by the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) and continued overnight. Firefighters are still cooling the scene to prevent re-ignition.

During the emergency response, the maritime authority deployed patrol boats to cordon off the affected waters and used drones for aerial monitoring to support firefighting efforts. Relevant authorities immediately activated their emergency response system to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading.

Port operator PSA International has implemented multiple safety measures, imposed risk controls over the affected area, and assisted in the safe unloading of the involved containers to ensure the safety of workers. Authorities confirmed that overall operations at Pasir Panjang Terminal remained unaffected and continued as normal.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Records show the EVER LENIENT is a container vessel with a capacity of approximately 9,466 TEU, built in 2014.

Although the incident occurred at one of the world’s busiest container hubs, no further disruptions were reported thanks to the rapid and effective emergency response. However, industry observers widely note that as ships grow larger and the proportion of dangerous goods transportation rises, the firefighting and emergency response capabilities of ports and vessels have become increasingly critical.

Located in southwestern Singapore, Pasir Panjang Terminal is a key component of the Port of Singapore and one of the core hubs in the global container shipping network.
