According to Reuters, Tanzania plans to restart the Bagamoyo Port project next month (December). The port is part of the Bagamoyo large-scale economic zone plan, located approximately 75 kilometers north of the commercial capital Dar es Salaam. This project was initially launched in 2004 and includes an industrial park along with railway and road networks.
Due to congestion at Tanzania's largest port, the Dar es Salaam Port, many shipping companies have opted for Kenya's Mombasa Port, causing Tanzania to lose some business in African landlocked markets.
In February of this year, the Tanzanian Port Authority confirmed that they had signed preliminary development memorandums for the Bagamoyo Port with China, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia.
A spokesperson for the Tanzanian government stated that the port will have 28 berths, with the initial phase focusing on constructing 14 of them. Construction equipment is on its way, but further details were not provided. The port will have a depth of up to 20 meters and will be able to accommodate giant container ships carrying up to 25,000 TEUs.
