According to reports, CMA CGM is about to sign an agreement to acquire a majority stake in the Hamburg Container Terminal (CTH) owned by Eurogate Group. The designed throughput capacity of the CTH terminal is 4 million TEUs. Recently, Eurogate Group reached an agreement with the city of Hamburg to invest approximately 1.1 billion euros in expanding the terminal, aiming to increase its throughput capacity to around 6 million TEUs.

Rodolphe Saadé, the Chairman of CMA CGM, recently visited Hamburg. While the specific scope of cooperation is not yet clear, there are various possibilities. According to analysis by Alphaliner, CMA CGM may directly invest in the CTH terminal and become a partner of the Eurogate Group. Alternatively, they could invest in Eurogate Group or its shareholder Eurokai Group, similar to MSC's acquisition of a stake in HHLA, the largest terminal operator in the Port of Hamburg. Eurogate Group is a joint venture between the private company Eurokai and the public port company BLG in Bremen.

Several CMA CGM shipping lines pass through the CTH terminal. Alphaliner estimates that CMA CGM currently contributes approximately one-third of the throughput at the CTH terminal. Apart from CMA CGM, several other container shipping companies hold stakes in various terminals in the Port of Hamburg, such as MSC's investment in HHLA, Hapag-Lloyd holding shares in the CTA terminal, and COSCO Shipping's investment in the CTT terminal.

The investment in the Hamburg Port CTH terminal is part of a series of recent terminal investments by CMA CGM. Recently, CMA CGM signed a contract with the Red Sea Gateway Terminal (RSGT) to invest $450 million in developing a fourth terminal at the Jeddah port. Additionally, last Friday, CMA CGM's subsidiary, CMA Terminals, signed an agreement with the Moroccan port company Marsa Maroc to operate the West Container Terminal at the Nador West Med Port in Morocco.
