The Suez Canal Authority is taking action to try to reverse the decline in shipping traffic and sharp drop in revenue caused by the Red Sea crisis. Admiral Osama Rabie, Chairman of the Suez Canal Authority, is expected to call on Maersk to "take the lead in resuming navigation through the Suez Canal" to support the recovery of the waterway.

During a meeting with the Danish Ambassador Lars Bo Møller and the delegation, Osama Rabie emphasized the cooperative relationship between the Suez Canal Authority and Maersk, appreciating the partnership based on trust and mutual benefit. They also had in-depth discussions on the security situation in the Red Sea region. The Danish Ambassador stated that returning to the Suez Canal is a "must" as the waterway remains a lifeline for global trade.

Maersk has a long-standing partnership with the Suez Canal, with its APM Terminals operating a significant container terminal in the northern end of the canal at Port Said. Expansion projects at this terminal are underway, expected to significantly increase port throughput and competitiveness.

However, since December 2023, attacks in the Red Sea region have dramatically worsened maritime security. Following an attack on the "Maersk Gibraltar," Maersk immediately halted voyages through the Strait of Mandeb. Just two weeks later, the "Maersk Hangzhou" was attacked while en route to Suez Port. Despite international escort operations gradually unfolding, Maersk has yet to resume routes through the Suez Canal due to ongoing high levels of uncertainty in the region's security.

The Suez Canal Authority has been in frequent contact with major shipping companies recently in an effort to rebuild confidence. However, plans for resuming navigation have been hindered by the attacks in the Red Sea region. With economic pressures in Egypt, the restoration of traffic through the Suez Canal has become a national strategic task. Analysts suggest that the effective implementation of a "peace agreement" between Israel and Hamas could be a significant turning point in the security landscape of Red Sea shipping. However, the full restoration of Red Sea shipping remains uncertain, influenced by various factors.
