According to HMM's statements, green methanol is considered a crucial alternative fuel for the shipping industry, and HMM is actively involved in the development and utilization of green methanol. Currently, international shipping companies are facing a triple mandate of "carbon tax," including the EU Maritime Fuel Regulation (FuelEU Maritime), the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS), the International Maritime Organization's "Net Zero Framework," and emission reduction policies in other regions.

To address this challenge, HMM has announced its ambitious mid- to long-term "decarbonization" strategy and plans to increase its container fleet to 130 vessels by 2030, with a total capacity of 1.5 million TEU. To support this strategy, HMM plans to invest a total of 23.5 trillion Korean won (approximately $17.202 billion), with around $10.541 billion allocated for sustainable management projects, including ordering low-carbon vessels and constructing green infrastructure.

HMM emphasizes, "We have been actively exploring the construction of a new energy fuel supply chain system, including green methanol, to support our green low-carbon transformation." The company also aims to have around 60 green vessels by 2030 and establish a carbon-neutral ecosystem across all shipping and logistics operations.

HMM also states that as a member of the Premier Alliance, they are working closely with other companies to advance green shipping and closely monitor upcoming decarbonization regulations. The alliance will introduce eco-friendly vessels in its services to achieve carbon neutrality goals.

While HMM has made progress in promoting green shipping, the widespread adoption of green methanol faces challenges such as production speed, pricing, infrastructure development, and safety protocols. However, HMM has successfully advanced green methanol bunkering operations in the Port of Shanghai, providing strong support for the company's green shipping initiatives.
