APM Terminals Apapa, a subsidiary of APM Terminals, emphasizes: Container congestion is the responsibility of shipping companies, not terminal operators. According to a statement released by the company manager, Steen Knudsen, on Thursday, recent media reports implying that APM Terminals does not accept empty containers are misleading. He notes that congestion issues at the Port of Lagos stem from a surge in import cargo, leading shipping companies to prioritize unloading loaded containers rather than evacuating empty ones.

Knudsen stresses, "The management of empty containers at terminals and responsibility in shipping lies entirely with one of the shipping companies that owns and controls container transport." He explains that the current imbalance has resulted in a significant buildup of empty containers within the terminal, drastically reducing available yard space and prompting APM Terminals to temporarily restrict the acceptance of additional empty containers.

He adds, "We are aware that this may have an impact on trucking companies, consignees, and the entire logistics chain. That's why we are actively working with shipping companies and relevant government authorities to expedite the evacuation of empty containers."

Knudsen further points out that the root cause of the issue does not lie in terminal operations but in systemic imbalances in container transport management. "Shipping companies play a critical role in ensuring the timely loading of empty containers for export after container returns. However, the enormous volume of imports is disrupting this balance," he states.

Lastly, Knudsen urges all stakeholders to remain patient and assures them that they are working diligently to address the congestion issues and restore normal operations.
