According to Zhongjin's understanding, the Danish shipping giant Maersk recently announced the signing of a cooperation agreement with Nokia to deploy private wireless networks on its fleet of 450 vessels.
This move is a key element of Maersk's new digital connectivity platform, OneWireless promotion plan, aimed at achieving real-time cargo tracking, enhancing supply chain transparency, and optimizing operational efficiency.
Nokia stated, "By adopting our private wireless technology, Maersk will effectively address the limitations of existing infrastructure on owned and chartered vessels, gaining more scalable and future-proof communication capabilities." The platform will cover all of Maersk's owned container vessels and over 100 chartered vessels.
Kjeld Dittmann, Head of Vessels and Cargo Connectivity at Maersk, explained, "With the Captain Peter solution [Maersk's existing platform], Maersk customers can monitor the temperature of their refrigerated cargo, but the current 2G network infrastructure on board limits the frequency of data point updates."
While customers can currently monitor the temperature of refrigerated containers, the existing 2G network on board limits the frequency of data updates. Upgrading to 4G technology will lead to a significant improvement in data granularity, laying the foundation for intelligent cargo tracking and in-depth operational analysis.
Kjeld Dittmann, Head of Vessels and Cargo Connectivity at Maersk, emphasized, "The platform can support thousands of IoT devices, ensuring optimal performance for refrigerated container tracking and fleet IoT systems." The project is expected to be fully deployed by the first quarter of 2026, with other technology partners including Onomondo, 42com Sat, Complea, and Zededa.
