Amid the impact of the Middle East conflict, gasoline and diesel prices have risen more sharply in most countries around the world than in Brazil. Data shows that among 128 countries and regions ranked, Brazil placed 90th in terms of gasoline price increases and 71st in diesel price increases.

According to a report by Brazil’s Folha de S.Paulo on April 9, the figures come from the Global Petrol Prices website, covering the period from February 23 to April 6 (the conflict began on February 28). It should be noted that the data is based on average or “typical prices” in each location, meaning regular retail prices excluding promotions, which may therefore differ somewhat from actual market prices.

Overall, there are significant differences in price increases across countries, linked to multiple factors including whether a country implements fuel price controls (as Brazil does), whether it is a major oil producer, or whether it relies heavily on oil imports.

Specifically, gasoline prices in Brazil rose by 7.6%. Among all countries, 25 saw increases of less than 1%, while the 89 countries with higher rises than Brazil recorded an average increase of 23.5%. For diesel, Brazil’s price rose by 23.5%; 21 countries had increases below 1%, and the 70 countries with higher growth than Brazil saw an average surge of 50.8%.

Regionally, the steepest rises in gasoline and diesel prices have been concentrated mainly in some developing economies in South and East Asia. By comparison, the United States ranked 14th globally with a 35.1% gasoline price increase, and 23rd in diesel with a 48.2% rise.
