According to reports from Moroccan television, approximately 85 containers fell into the sea near the entrance of the port of Casablanca, with a container ship floating in the sea and tugboats providing assistance.

Other media reports indicate that these containers, which fell into the sea before unloading, originated from China. Therefore, there may still be Chinese goods on board and in the containers that have fallen into the sea.

Local port officials have ordered the temporary suspension of operations at the port of Casablanca in Morocco during the night as a result of the container accident near the port entrance. It is currently unclear when operations will resume, as a large number of containers are floating in the port channel in the daylight.

The National Port Authority of Morocco issued an order to suspend operations around 11 p.m. local time on Thursday, February 26, citing unsafe passage in the port.

Media reports indicate that the port remains suspended on Friday.

The container ship in question is reported to be the "Ionikos," owned by Greece and leased to Hapag-Lloyd for operation. As the ship left Casablanca, the containers on board fell into the fairway.

The Ionikos was built in 2009, measuring 258 meters in length, 32 meters in width, with a deadweight of 52,427 tons and a capacity of 4,360 standard containers. The incident caused the ship to tilt, resulting in an estimated 85 containers falling into the sea. Currently, the vessel is anchored approximately 6 nautical miles from the coast.

The Royal Maritime Gendarmerie and the Royal Navy have deployed five ships and a helicopter to search for these containers. Officials have stated that due to the nighttime nature of the accident, it has been challenging to locate the containers floating in the waterway. Tugboats are on standby to handle the containers floating in the water.

Reports suggest that the containers were loaded with auto parts, furniture, and other consumer goods, with at least one container breaking open and washing up on a local beach. It has been reported that Nestlé-brand cereal breakfast boxes were found on the beach.

During this winter season, a series of storms and adverse weather conditions have affected port operations, with continuous heavy waves leading to interruptions in port operations.

The port management authority has indicated that operations will resume once safety for passage is ensured.
