As per Zhongjin's understanding, a fire broke out on a feeder container ship named "Wisconsin" at the busy Tanjung Perak Port in Surabaya, Indonesia, on December 29. The ship had docked at the Berlian Container Terminal the day before.
The fire occurred around 5 a.m. local time, with flames erupting suddenly in the engine room, emitting thick smoke that drew attention. The fire brigade promptly arrived, and after about four hours, the fire was brought under control. All 22 crew members were safely evacuated, with no injuries reported.
The fire originated near a generator deep inside the ship's engine room, posing initial challenges to firefighting efforts. Firefighters had to wear heavy breathing apparatus to extinguish the blaze.
Sixteen fire units were involved in the firefighting operation. The fire spread to adjacent areas, causing damage to an interior space of about 20 square meters, including the paint storage area and carbon dioxide tank room.
The ship contained nine tons of fuel, including two tons of heavy oil. Approximately 60% of the fuel was destroyed, but the spread of the fire was successfully contained.
Port operations were minimally affected, and after confirming safety, the terminal resumed full operations. Investigations are ongoing, with preliminary analysis suggesting that an electrical short circuit may have triggered the fire. The vessel was built in 1995 and was acquired by Salam Pacific Indonesia Line in 2015, serving in the Indonesian archipelago and international feeder routes.
