Recently, Tanjung Pelepas Port (PTP) announced the launch of a new berth development project named "Berth Zero" as part of its expansion plan. This project has been awarded to a joint venture between MMC Engineering Sdn Bhd and Antara Ko (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd.
According to Qingdao Zhongjin, Tanjung Pelepas Port is the world's third-largest transshipment port, following Singapore Port and Busan Port. The PTP terminal is a joint venture between the MMC Group and APM Terminals, with ownership stakes of 70% and 30%, respectively. In the twin-star alliance route network of Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd, Tanjung Pelepas Port will serve as a crucial transshipment hub.
The newly constructed berth is a linear quay approximately 360 meters long, extending onto undeveloped port reserve land, equipped with 4 container cranes and a yard designed specifically for electric Rubber-Tired Gantry Cranes (e-RTGs).
The Tanjung Pelepas Port's new berth project "Berth Zero" has been awarded to a reputable company for execution. Datuk Seri Che Khalib, Chairman of Tanjung Pelepas Port, highlighted that this project aims to optimize the port layout and is planned to increase the port's total throughput to around 16 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) within the next two and a half years. Mark Hardiman, the Port's CEO, stated that the "Berth Zero" berth expansion project is another significant expansion following the expansion projects of Berths 13 and 14 in 2014, which will redefine the port's handling capacity. By 2024, Tanjung Pelepas Port's throughput had reached 12.253 million TEUs, with a historical high of 11.2 million TEUs in 2021.
