DP World plans to develop and operate a container terminal on the outskirts of Montreal, Canada, with a total investment of up to 1.6 billion Canadian dollars (approximately 8.264 billion RMB).
DP World has signed an agreement with the Montreal Port Authority to oversee the ground engineering design of the Contrecoeur terminal and will formulate a long-term operational plan. The company currently operates the Centerm terminal in Vancouver, as well as container terminals in Prince Rupert and Saint John in Canada.
Located upstream on the St. Lawrence River, the Contrecoeur terminal will have an annual handling capacity of up to 1.15 million standard containers. Montreal Port currently handles container ships ranging between 4,000 and 5,000 TEUs, with a maximum capacity to handle ships of up to 8,000 TEUs, while the Contrecoeur terminal will have a greater unloading capacity. The Montreal Port Authority is collaborating with the government to initiate large vessel trials on the St. Lawrence River.
The Contrecoeur project has been in progress since the 1980s. In 2023, several terminal operators withdrew from the bidding process due to high underwater construction costs, leading to project delays. As Canada seeks to reduce its dependence on trade with the United States, advancing this project has become a national priority. DP World has announced that underwater construction for the Contrecoeur terminal will commence next year, with surface construction scheduled to start in 2027, and operations expected to begin in 2030.
