On the afternoon of May 13th, the People's Committee of Hai Phong City and Vietnam National Shipping Lines held the completion ceremony for the 3rd and 4th international container terminals at the Lach Huyen Port Terminal Area. The event was attended and presided over by the President of Vietnam, Mr. Le Huan.
These two terminals are operated as a joint venture between MSC and Vietnam National Shipping Lines, with a total investment of approximately 69.46 trillion Vietnamese Dong (equivalent to around 1.931 billion Chinese Yuan). The total length of the 3rd and 4th terminals is 750 meters, with a water depth of -16 meters, capable of accommodating 165,000-ton mother vessels (14,000 containers) and unloaded vessels of up to 200,000 tons. They are equipped with advanced loading and unloading equipment, as well as berths for barges, with an annual cargo throughput capacity of up to 1.5 million containers.
Currently, Hai Phong Port operates five major port areas: Hoang Dao, Ci Pu, Ting Wu, Xin Wu, and Lach Huyen. With the operation of the 3rd and 4th terminals, the Lach Huyen Port will have a complete system of six berths to fully meet the growing freight demands of Hai Phong and the northern region. The cargo throughput at Hai Phong Port has been growing at an average annual rate of 12% to 15%, expected to reach 190 million tons by 2024 and projected to reach 212 million tons by 2025. According to the plan, the Lach Huyen Terminal Area will be developed as a comprehensive port area integrating gateway and transit functions, with container terminals, general cargo terminals, bulk cargo terminals, liquid/gas cargo terminals, international passenger terminals, and public terminals, capable of accommodating 18,000 TEU container ships, 100,000-ton bulk carriers, 150,000-ton liquid cargo ships, and 225,000-ton cruise ships.
