A.P. Moller-Maersk, a Danish integrated shipping company, has taken a significant step in digital innovation by recently announcing the deployment of its next-generation Internet of Things connectivity platform, OneWireless, across its fleet of 450 vessels. This move aims to provide advanced IoT capabilities to meet the growing demand from customers for real-time data transmission. The 450 vessels include Maersk's own ships and over 100 leased vessels.

Kjeld Dittmann, Head of Maersk's Fleet and Cargo IoT, stated, "Through OneWireless, we can offer customers real-time cargo tracking, enhanced supply chain visibility, and improved operational efficiency. The platform can connect thousands of IoT devices, ensuring optimal performance for refrigerated cargo tracking and fleet IoT."

Maersk's customers can currently monitor temperature-controlled cargo using the Captain Peter solution. However, the existing 2G network infrastructure on the ships limits the frequency of data point updates. With the deployment of OneWireless, the onboard network will be upgraded to 4G technology, significantly increasing data granularity and laying the foundation for smarter cargo tracking and deeper operational insights.

"The upgrade of the fleet's IoT infrastructure is akin to the shift consumers experienced from 2G to 4G mobile networks. The widespread adoption of 4G technology brought faster speeds, higher-quality connections for consumers, and created many new possibilities in everyday life; OneWireless will bring about similar changes. The OneWireless platform revolutionizes how we communicate with cargo onboard, sharing real-time data at unprecedented speed and reliability, which will greatly enhance our efficiency and operational standards, meeting the needs of this interconnected and data-driven era," added Kjeld Dittmann.

As per Zhongjin's understanding, the OneWireless platform is a unified integrated network supporting various wireless technologies (NB-IoT, Cat-M, and LTE broadband), offering scalability, security, and flexibility to seamlessly integrate Maersk's customers' IoT devices and services.

OneWireless supports seamless interoperability between private and public networks. Maersk's customers can monitor cargo regardless of whether it's at sea, in ports, or on land and can use their own IoT solutions based on common standards.

The platform provides seamless, smooth support for connected containers' cargo monitoring. Its underlying technology is an organic combination of advanced components from multiple industry-leading technology partners, including Onomondo, Nokia, 42com Sat, Complea, and Zededa.

Maersk plans to complete the deployment of OneWireless in the first quarter of 2026. Due to the hardware replacements required on the vessels, Maersk will carefully plan and deploy during port calls only.

Maersk is the world's second-largest container shipping company. According to Alphaliner data, Maersk currently operates 737 container ships, including 336 owned vessels and 401 chartered vessels, with a total capacity of 4.58 million TEU and a market share of 14.3%. Additionally, Maersk has 52 new ships under construction with a total capacity of 710,000 TEU, representing approximately 15.6% of the existing fleet.
