The sixth-largest global shipping company, Ocean Network Express (ONE), has announced the acquisition of shares in Dongjin Global Terminal Busan (DGT) from South Korea's DongYun Group to expand its container terminal network in Asia.

The specific acquisition amount and ownership percentage have not been disclosed, but ONE stated that it has acquired "indirect but significant shares."

DGT Terminal, operational since 2024, is South Korea's first fully automated terminal, with DongYun Group holding a 30-year concession. It will manage Phases 2-5, 2-6, and feeder terminals at Busan New Port, encompassing a total of six berths. The designed throughput capacity of the DGT Terminal is set to reach 4 million TEUs.

Prior to this, ONE had acquired a stake in NPCT Terminal 1 at Jakarta Port in November 2024 and DCT Terminal at Dalian Port, China, in December 2025.

CEO Jeremey Nixon of ONE mentioned that shipping companies increasingly need to be directly involved in port operations, especially controlling key gateways or hub ports, a trend expected to rapidly develop over the next 10 to 15 years. However, the concern lies in the limited availability of terminals or ports for acquisition.

DongYun Group stated that the collaboration with DGT Terminal will ensure stable cargo volumes, making Busan New Port the core transshipment hub for ONE in Northeast Asia. The partnership between ONE and DGT Terminal is anticipated to more than double the cargo volumes and is expected to triple with the completion of the new terminal project. ONE aims to establish Busan New Port as a core transshipment logistics hub, potentially reducing cargo diversion to ports in China.

Over the past five years, the transshipment volume as a percentage of total container throughput at Busan Port has continued to increase, rising from nearly 53% in 2021 to 56% last year.
